Polyurea Coatings – Proven Performance in Australian Mining

The term ‘polyurea coating’ applies to a particular chemistry of elastomeric (flexible) coatings, initially developed in the 1990’s but now includes a huge assortment of formulations suiting a wide range of applications and markets.

Polyurea is now used in place of traditional paints and polyurethanes in diverse markets such as mining, oil & gas, water & wastewater, waterproofing, marine, construction and chemical processing.

Key Physical Properties

The key unique set of physical attributes which make polyurea ideal in the mining industry include:

Seamless, single layer membrane to prevent peeling back or racing at seams or joints

Good abrasion resistance (excellent abrasion resistance for some formulations)

Flexible and tough which resists cracking if the substrate moves

Unlike polyurethane, polyurea does not react with water or water vapour during application and this reduces pin-holing

Good chemical resistance (very good chemical resistance for some formulations)

Fast application and return to service, regardless of the ambient temperature, which slashes downtime
Low moisture vapour permeability which provides excellent waterproofing and corrosion protection.

Virtually unlimited film build provides higher protection or to re-surface damaged substrate

Good retention of physical properties under extended exposure to high UV levels

Nukote Polyurea

Nukote Coating Systems International are the world leader in advanced coating systems, delivering products that customers can trust.  Their comprehensive range of polyurea and hybrids has been well proven in tough Australian conditions.

Applying polyurea correctly requires a very high level of expertise and the correct equipment. BSC teams have been Nukote applicators for nearly two decades and use only the latest surface preparation and spray equipment.

The team at BSC Coatings only apply Nukote because they know that it works and when lining critical items of plant, there are no second chances. Reputation is everything and BSC are renowned for getting jobs done safely, on time, and on budget.

Nukote ST Pure Polyurea

Multipurpose High-Performance Polyurea

Typical Applications

  • Tanks
  • Bunds
  • Mineral transport bins
  • Hoppers
  • Screens
  • Chutes
  • Thickeners
  • Float Cells

Nukote ST® is a multipurpose high-performance pure polyurea designed and developed to perform well for anticorrosion and waterproofing applications on steel, concrete, and many other substrates. ST is a two-component, 100% solids, pure polyurea that significantly reduces the moisture problems that commonly cause pinholing and blistering in most polyurethane, polyurethane-hybrid and other organic coating systems.

BSC Coatings have sprayed hundreds of thousands of litres of Nukote ST in a wide variety of applications including lining tanks, screens, structural steel, bunds, bins, float cells, thickeners, trucks, pipes and trommels.

Nukote ST has a faster gel time to minimize outgassing and the resultant pinholes, excess sagging and for overhead applications.

Nukote ST displays good thermal stability and good impact, abrasion, chemical, and UV resistance. Nukote ST can be textured for anti-skid purposes, applied as a multicolour membrane or applied over geotextile substrates. Very good moisture permeation resistance makes this an excellent barrier coating. Excellent adhesion to most substrates is achieved with proper surface preparation and correct application.  A suitable Nukote primer may be required in some circumstances.

Nukote HAR

High Abrasion Resistance Modified Polyurea

Typical Applications

  • Mineral transport bins
  • Hoppers
  • Conveyer belt repairs
  • Trommels
  • Screens
  • Chutes

Nukote HAR is the premium modified polyurea for mining applications in severe and demanding conditions requiring very high abrasion resistance.

Nukote HAR is a two-component, flexible, rapid curing, 100% solids, modified polyurea that significantly outperforms the polyurea and polyurethane elastomers traditionally used in mining and industrial applications.

Nukote HAR is suitable in applications with very high abrasion in dry or wet conditions for lining plant, conveyors, vehicles, screens, and processing vessels.

The low coefficient of friction also minimises hang-up and carry-back when used to line bins or wagons transporting damp mineral ores.

Nukote HAR outperforms 27% chrome iron in a slurry abrasion test.

Nukote HTD

High Modulus Pure Polyurea

Typical Applications

  • SAG and Ball Mill Shell Liners
  • Rail Wagon LIners
  • Chutes

Nukote HTD is a high performance pure polyurea ideally suited for specific mining applications requiring a stiffer, harder polyurea formulation.

Nukote HTD is a two-component, 100% solids, pure polyurea that significantly reduces the moisture problems that commonly cause pinholing and blistering in most polyurethane, polyurethane-hybrid and other organic coating systems.  Formulated for application on concrete, steel or other substrates Nukote HTD provides protection against abrasion, corrosion, chemicals and impacts.

Nukote HTD has proven to be ideal for lining SAG and Ball mill shells or for the internal lining of rail wagons, trucks and bins used for transporting mineral ores

Nukote CBR

Conveyor Belt Repair Polyurea

Used for

  • On-line repair of conveyor belts

Nukote CBR is a high-performance pure polyurea used for repairing wear or damage on conveyor belts.

Nukote CBR is a 100% solids, flexible, aromatic, fast set, two component spray applied pure polyurea.

When the rubber is primed using Nukote Premera nano primers, Nukote CBR polyurea forms a bond stronger than the original rubber.

The fast set formulation allows conveyor belts to be repaired online as a continuous process.  This is faster, cheaper and lasts longer than other repair methods.

Nukote FR

Fire Resistant Modified Polyurea

Typical Applications

  • Wooden Utility Poles
  • Transformers
  • Flammable Goods Storage
  • Flammable Chemical Bunds

Nukote FR is a fast set, Class 1 fire-rated, multi-component, 100% solids, spray applied, modified polyurea coating or liner system for wood, metal, concrete, fibreglass and other substrates.

Nukote FR is designed as a fire rated membrane and also performs well in anticorrosion and waterproofing applications on steel, concrete, and many other substrates.

Nukote FR can be applied at temperatures ranging from -30° to 120°C. Nukote FR displays excellent fire resistance properties, chemical resistance, and thermal stability and UV resistance.

Nukote FR exhibits very good resistance to aggressive termites. Its moisture insensitivity makes it suitable for application on wooden utility poles.

Nukote XT Plus

Extreme Conditions

Typical Applications

  • Acid bunds
  • Chemical bunds
  • Concrete plinths
  • Strong acids and bases
  • Tanks
  • Waste water

Nukote XT Plus is the premium modified polyurea for mining applications in severe and demanding conditions requiring high resistance to acids, bases and other chemicals. Soutions up to 50% sulphuric acid can be contained.

Nukote XT Plus is a two-component, flexible, rapid curing, 100% solids, modified polyurea that significantly outperforms the polyurea and polyurethane elastomers traditionally used in mining and industrial applications.

Nukote XT Plus is suitable where anaerobic and aerobic waste by-products combined with elevated temperatures are expected. The product is commonly specified in conjunction with other Nukote products in monolithic compositions or as a geotextile composite for applications in immersion as liner, or in secondary containment of chemical storage tanks.
